- (I'll cross post this to comp.sys.amiga.misc too as I think these
- machines have much in common)

-
- My, not neccessarily substitutive, but supplementary, idea would be to
- use small microphone/loudspeaker (wired or wireless - one could maybe
- even produce a brooch with them build in - beam me up Spock ! 8) or
- phone to use your computer from anywhere to hear fex. weather forecast,
- record a particular program from tv, play some music or even cook coffee etc.
-
- This sort of integration of computer & other home electronics could
- surely be the area where Windows will be beaten. Nowadays computers
- have enough horsepower to accomplish this, but for some reason very
- little has been done on the area.
-
- I know that speaker independent voice regocnition isn't possible yet -
- for unlimited vocabulary, that is. And that nowadays speech syntesis
- still isn't pleasant to hear. But this doesn't mean that the idea
- couldn't be carried out decently enough already now. With proper tactics
- one platform could be dominating this area before others have time to sneeze.
-
- Do I hear you asking "which proper tactics ?" ? 8)
- Well, for starters:
- - Start co-operation with couple of Universities which have good reputation
- on the field. Promise fex. full developing support and computers.
- - At the same time coordinate also efforts of other developers so that asap
- there would be comprehensive set of different kinds of tools for developing all
- sorts of speechsoftware.
- - From the start go for the very best possible quality. Fex. speech syntesis
- would propably need cd-rom for samples & huge set of rules or big neuralnet-
- emulation/whatever to get the best results. This software could then be
- "downgraded" for fex. laptops or settopboxes if neccessary.
- - Remember that only minority of people in world can talk english. This is
- something which is many times forgotten esp. in USA.
-
- Ok, there are many other things to do than speechsoftware to properly integrate
- fex. vcr with computer. But for starters I think it would be a good idea to
- take care of the interface with remote controls (which BeBox kind of already
- has, if I have understood correctly). If the manufacturer of the platform would
- say that this kind of integration is high priority for them and promise good
- support for third party products, I'm sure there would be plenty of them soon.
-
- Something like this will surely be in many homes at year 2002.
- My point is, that it would be possible to have it 1997.

- ps. Send me a BeBox and I'll write some speech software for it as my
- graduate work... or PowerAmiga could do as well, I think there will be
- one before I get started... 8)
